Massachusetts Maritime Academy, also known as simply MMA, Mass Maritime or Maritime, is a regionally accredited, coeducational, state college in Buzzards Bay, which is a census-designated place in the town of Bourne, in Barnstable County, in the US state of Massachusetts, with more than 3500 people, living within its limits, according to the 2000 census estimate.
MMA was established in 1891 and it is the 2nd oldest state maritime academy in the country. It offers its students undergraduate degrees in maritime-related fields, as well as graduate degrees and professional studies including a Master of Science in Emergency Management as well as Facilities Management and a wide array of professional/continuing education programs.
Mass Maritime's athletic teams are known as the Buccaneers, and they compete in NCAA Division III, in 9 sports for men and 8 for women. Their distinctive colors are white and blue.
MMA's noteworthy alumni, include: Maurice J. Bresnahan Jr. - Rear Admiral, USN, MMA, President of Massachusetts Maritime Academy from 1998 to 2004, Emory Rice - Commander, USNR, MMA, Quartermaster of USS Olympia at the Battle of Manila Bay, while in command of a freighter in World War I, attacked, rammed and sank a German U-boat, for which he received the Navy Cross, and Richard Phillips - Captain of the MV Maersk Alabama, former hostage of Somali pirates, rescued by Navy SEALs.
